UCF just launched a new carpool / ride-sharing website in conjunction with a company called Zimride. The idea is for users to post their routes and find people to ride with, thus reducing the number of cars on campus. Users who ride together can save (or even make) a little bit of money, while reducing the number of cars on campus and helping out the environment.
Even though construction of the new parking garage just started, parking is sure to be scarce again once Fall semester starts. Hopefully the new service will help to improve the parking situation on campus.
Zimride is being used at other large universities such as UCLA, West Virginia University, and the University of Michigan. You need a ucf.edu email address to sign up for the UCF-specific Zimride site. Check it out at http://zimride.ucf.edu/

Earlier this year, UCF opened new electric vehicle charging stations next to Memory Mall in parking lot D1. The charging station generates electricity using the solar panels that are mounted to the top of the steel structure. As electric vehicles start to enter the market in the coming years, these spaces will be used for general (student) parking. For now, they’re being used for research and other university uses.

Knights Football kicks off in about 70 days, and fans tailgating at UCF will notice something new at the south end of the Memory Mall this season. The Veterans Commemorative Site is being put together as we speak, and it appears it will be finished by the time football fans invade campus in early September.
Navy veteran Don Reynolds of Sanford designed the new Site (Mr. Reynolds also created the Charging Knight in front of BHNS and the new Charles Millican Statue near Millican Hall). What do you think?

In one of my previous posts I mentioned that GameStop was going to be taking over the former Copy Center space across from Chick-Fil-A in the John T. Washington Center. I snapped a few quick pics today with my phone when I noticed that work inside the space has started.
Gamestop is a video game and entertainment software retailer. They already have a few locations very close to the UCF campus, so this location is presumably intended to serve the on-campus students and capture some of the foot traffic that flows through the JTWC every day.

Out with the old…
… and in with the new!
The new building just opened a few weeks ago and replaces the old trailer pictured above. The new building cost UCF about $900,000. It was designed by Schweizer-Waldroff and built by Wharton-Smith.
